Dr Arthur William Douthwaite(中文名字:稻惟德)

Name in Chinese: 稻惟德

British medical missionary with the China Inland Mission, and subject of the book Douthwaite of the Double Dragon.

Graduate of Sheffield University.

Married (1) Unknown.

Married (2) Constance Groves, daughter of Edward Kennaway Groves, a civil engineer. Together they were parents of Dr. Arthur Henry Douthwaite.

Engaged to third future Mrs. Douthwaite at the time of his death.

In 1898, he delivered an address in London on "Relation of the Marriage Question to Missionary Work":

Women are liable to certain functional disorders, which are readily provoked by the disturbance of their emotions, in consequence of the break-up of home associations, the long voyage, the entire change of surroundings on reaching their destination, the effect of a strange climate, the study of a difficult language and the enforced sedentary live while engaged in study. Of course I don't say that all lady missionaries are thus affected, but many are, and unfortunately, functional disturbance sometimes leads to structural change, and a long list of evils follows.

He returned to China and died of dysentery.

There are a number of on-line biographies; all require monetary compensation to read them.
